Choosing the right wines for your Thanksgiving feast

Thanksgiving is upon us, and there is no better time to start selecting wines to complement the feast. It’s also a good time to buy the wine if you don’t have something already stored away that you want to drink, as many wine stores have sales the week before Thanksgiving.

The main idea for Thanksgiving is to not try to serve just one wine. First, Thanksgiving feasts typically feature a variety of tastes, and getting the wine pairing right is important. Second, there are a number of possible pairings with traditional Thanksgiving cuisine, and why not experiment a bit?

From appetizers, to white and dark turkey meat, mashed potatoes, yams, stuffing, cranberry sauce, all the way to pumpkin or pecan pie – is there truly a single wine that can take you all the way through?

How to Pair Wine with Chicken

It’s all about the sauce.

When pairing wine with food, it is much more critical that you think about the sauce than the particular kind of meat. For example, because chicken is a light white meat, many people assume that they should serve a Chardonnay or some other white varietal. Oftentimes, that would be a mistake.

Chicken lends itself to many different types of sauces and spices, which means that many different types of wines pair well depending on the sauce or spice. Generally speaking, chicken pairs better with whites because whites don’t overpower the taste of the chicken – but, again, this is dependent on the sauce.

The basics of decanting old and young red wines.
