In the early 1970s, it was widely believed that the European viniferous grapes could not be grown successfully on a commercial basis on the East Coast. Long Island led the way in reversing this mindset after the successful pioneering efforts in Long Island in the middle of that decade. In the decades since the Long Island wine industry has grown from one small vineyard to 3,000 acres of vines and over thirty wineries producing world-class wines.
A recent survey of U.S. respondents found 48 percent planned to visit a U.S. vineyard in 2012. The top ten planned destinations were:
